From Original Hosiery to Breathable Briefs

The Jockey Story starts in the US in 1876 when Samuel Thrall Cooper founded a wool hosiery manufacturing business in Michigan. His wool socks were created as a solution for lumberjacks who were prone to blisters caused by wearing poor quality wool socks. Right from the beginning, Jockey has always made a commitment to comfort.

In the 1920s Arthur Kneibler joined the company to head up sales and marketing and it was he who became the originator of one of the great milestones in the history of men's underwear, the Jockey Short. In 1934 he initiated the underwear industry's greatest breakthrough ever - the birth of the Jockey Brief.

The Jockey Brief was revolutionary because it provided men with "masculine support" that was only available at the time through the use of an athletic support - the trusty "jock strap". To discreetly describe this incredible new underwear, the company branded it the Jock-ey brief, and the following year the hottest item ever, the Y-Front brief, a Jockey Brief with a fly opening, was launched.

Today, those highly original, comfortable and functional designs remain in the Jockey Collection alongside new innovations that include athletic and active/sport underwear, breathable and moisture wicking fabric technology, super stretch cottons and flat locked seams and a whole host of styles and designs that are classic and contemporary.
