Mens Underwear : A Guide to The Perfect Fit

Whether you are a man buying underwear for yourself, or a woman shopping for underwear as a gift for the man in your life, this guide to finding the perfect fit and style will help you avoid potentially embarrassing mistakes.

Men's Underwear Style

There are three main styles of men's underwear to choose from : the men's brief, the men's boxer and the men's boxer-brief. Personal preference is usually the main deciding point as to the style purchased. When shopping for men's underwear, you should also consider what the underwear will be worn with and the natural physique of the wearer.

Men's brief underwear was once considered old-fashioned but has regained popularity in recent years as manufacturers introduce new colour schemes and patterns for a contemporary look. Briefs offer a high level of support, but should never be fitted so tightly that they restrict movement. Men who wear formal trousers to work or prefer a tight pant style may prefer the men's brief, as there are no legs to ride up or show through the fabric of the trouser.

Where briefs offer support, the traditional boxer underwear style offers a sensation of freedom. Elasticised at the waistband only, boxers have a straight leg cut and are usually constructed from light-weight cotton, which makes them an ideal choice for keeping cool in summer. Many men like to wear boxer underwear with a vest or T-shirt as pyjamas or when relaxing around the home. Boxers look very appealing on smaller framed men.

Men's boxer-brief underwear combines the best elements of the brief and the boxer short. Semi-fitted, with a short leg, this style of underwear offers both support and coverage. This style is very popular with men who have a large physical build and those who like a close-fitted look for their underwear.

Getting the Right Fit for Men's Underwear

The most important part of shopping for men's underwear is ensuring that the garments you buy offer a comfortable fit, right through the day. As a general rule, your underwear should sit snug at the waistband, and never chafe or dig into your skin.

When trying men's underwear on, move around jump up and down on the spot, do some squats and lean forwards. Pay particular attention to the in-seam area. If the in-seam is too short, you may find that your underwear rides up, which not only is uncomfortable, but means you have to constantly adjust yourself not great if you have company!

Brief underwear should be purchased in the same size waistband as your trousers, whereas boxer shorts should be one size larger than your usual waistband size. It really is a case of trial and error to find the best fit for you, so don't be afraid to experiment with different sizing and styles.

Whichever your preferred underwear style, it is useful to have a variety of boxers, briefs and boxer-briefs on hand in your wardrobe.
